We’re thrilled to feature a guest blog post from our friends at Trans Canada Trail! The trail is the longest recreational trail network in the world and connects Canadians and visitors to nature and to one another, from coast to coast to coast, through accessible and inclusive outdoor activities.
There is something invigorating about being outdoors, breathing in fresh air and being active in every season. It’s a fantastic way to clear your mind and energize your body!
It’s also important to keep yourself safe while exploring new and familiar places alike, such as one of the many trails you’ll find along the 28,000-kilometre Trans Canada Trail network that stretches from coast to coast to coast.
Our friends at BC AdventureSmart recommend following the Three Ts when exploring outside:
- Trip planning: plan your travel route, know the terrain and conditions, check the weather, fill out a trip plan
- Training: know and stay within your limits, obtain the knowledge and skills you need before heading out
- Taking the essentials: such as extra food and water, extra clothing (i.e., gloves/mittens), navigation/communication devices, first aid kit, flashlight and/or headlamp, sun protection, signaling device (i.e., whistle)
Putting these safety tips into practice can help reduce risk and ensure your outing is safe, responsible and most of all, fun!
Start your planning by visiting the Trail’s online map to see which sections are calling your name. With 80% of people in Canada living within 30 minutes of an entry point of the Trans Canada Trail, you may find a spot close to home or you could pick a trail in another community or province for something a little different.
Whether you enjoy hiking, running, cycling, paddling, rolling or skiing – have fun, be safe and tag ParticipACTION, Trans Canada Trail and BC AdventureSmart on social to share your adventures!
