Il a été démontré que de comprendre et de changer le « climat social » (c.-à-d. : l’impression générale, les attitudes, croyances et opinions à propos d’un sujet dans une société) associé à un comportement affecte le niveau d’activité physique<\/a> d’une population. Le Dr<\/sup> Matthew Fagan<\/span><\/a>, chercheur postdoctoral à l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique, la Dre<\/sup> Leigh Vanderloo<\/a>, directrice scientifique de ParticipACTION, et d’autres chercheurs, ont récemment publié les résultats de leur étude<\/span><\/a> (en anglais seulement) portant sur les changements du climat social entourant l’activité physique au Canada durant les cinq dernières années.<\/p>\n

Cette étude a conclu qu’il y a eu des changements positifs et négatifs dans le climat social de l’activité physique au Canada. Nous croyons que cela s’explique par la sensibilisation constante de la santé publique au sujet des bienfaits de l’activité physique<\/a>, ainsi que par les effets prolongés des nombreuses fermetures de centres d’activité physique durant la pandémie. Il est fort probable que durant la pandémie, de nombreuses personnes et leurs enfants ont trouvé différentes manières d’être actifs et ont conservé ces habitudes lorsque ces établissements ont réouvert leurs portes et que les activités de sport organisé ont recommencé.<\/p>\n

Cela nous indique que les gens sont conscients de l’importance de ce comportement et des conséquences de ne pas faire assez d’activité physique d’intensité moyenne à élevée chaque semaine. Toutefois, l’étude met aussi en lumière que malgré ce haut niveau de conscience, l’intention, la motivation et l’action ne se succèdent pas toujours naturellement. It’s clear that people in Canada feel that physical inactivity is a serious health concern because out of all eight behaviours we asked them about, physical inactivity was ranked the second most serious. But when looking at the changes between 2018 and 2023, certain events may have impacted people’s views. Par exemple, à l’échelle de la population, il est peut-être plus facile de cibler d’autres aspects du climat social, comme les attitudes entourant la sévérité de l’inactivité physique, plutôt que de changer le paysage politique d’un enjeu social.<\/p>\n

La portée de cette conclusion se résume en deux points. Premièrement, c’est un résultat positif, car il suggère que la majeure partie de la population canadienne est ouverte aux interventions en matière de politique et de pratique qui ne sont pas axées uniquement sur l’individu. Deuxièmement, nous savons que les personnes qui croient que les individus portent le blâme de leurs problèmes de santé sont moins susceptibles de soutenir des politiques concernant les comportements en matière de santé. Cela complique le travail des législateurs et des interventionnistes de changer le comportement d’une population.
